DETROIT – May 23, 2007 – Hughes Telematics, a pioneer in end-to-end telematics solutions, has been honored with a 2007 International Telematics Award at the annual Telematics Update conference in Detroit, MI. The awards celebrate achievement and innovation in 14 unique vehicle telematics categories. Winners are selected by a panel of judges that includes top industry experts and analysts. Hughes Telematics was selected as the industry’s leading “Newcomer,” an award presented each year to the one company that creates the most market impact with a new business model or innovation.
“We’re very proud to be recognized by the global telematics industry for our flexible end-to-end telematics solution,” says Erik Goldman, president, Hughes Telematics. “Our entire business model is built on customization and choice, a critical requirement as automakers fine-tune their telematics strategy to meet the continuously and rapidly changing needs of their customers.”
Hughes Telematics is majority owned by Apollo Management, a private equity firm with over $27 billion under management. Prior to formalizing its telematics operations under the Hughes Telematics name in November 2006, the company was building an unmatched foundation of assets and resources, from the global satellite communications network strengths of sister company Hughes Communications to strategic acquisitions like the purchase of fleet telematics leader Networkcar in 2006.
Hughes Telematics is ideally positioned as the entire telematics category shifts into overdrive, says Goldman. Research shows that drivers are not simply embracing the time- and money-saving potential of a “connected car,” but many already expect important security benefits like accident notification as part of their vehicle’s standard safety equipment. This shift to a consumer-driven market isn’t lost on auto manufacturers. Hughes Telematics announced Chrysler Group as its first automotive manufacturer partner in January 2007.
